Planning your film

What determines video production cost in Malaysia?

The length of the finished film is only one part of a production budget. A 30-second commercial with casting, set dressing and several locations can require more work than a three-minute interview film.

Start with the deliverables

Define the main film, its intended audience and where it will appear. List cutdowns, vertical versions, languages, captions and delivery specifications separately. Planning these early helps the team capture what is needed during the shoot.

The main cost decisions

  • Creative development: research, concept, script, storyboard and revisions before production.
  • Shoot requirements: number of days, locations, travel, access windows and the time needed for each setup.
  • People and styling: performers, voice-over, wardrobe, makeup, props and art direction where the concept requires them.
  • Camera and lighting: the crew and equipment needed to achieve the intended images safely and within the schedule.
  • Post-production: editing, colour, sound, graphics, animation and the number of versions.
  • Usage: music, performers and other licensed elements should match the intended channels, territories and usage period.

Compare the scope, not just the total

Check whether two quotations include the same shoot hours, crew, talent, locations, revisions and final versions. Ask which items are optional and what happens if the brief changes. A lower total can represent a smaller scope rather than the same production for less.

How to work within a budget

Prioritise the scenes that carry the main message. Consolidate locations when that still serves the story, prepare interview subjects and approvals in advance, and agree the script before filming. If the budget is fixed, share it early so the production approach can be designed around it.

Request a useful quotation

Send your company background, objective, reference films, intended platforms, shoot location, deadline and budget range. A reference helps communicate style; it does not define the resources needed to recreate it. JackLoo provides a project-specific quotation after discussing the scope.
